With degrees from Wellesley College and Lawrence University, she in turn taught writing at Columbia University. She wrote and published regularly from the mid-1920s through the 1970s. An editor and columnist for Ladies Home Journal from 1937 to 1958, she also contributed similar columns and articles to Family Circle, The Saturday Evening Post, Cosmopolitan and Good Housekeeping.

My teen years were not the best, or the easiest for me, and so I used to read a lot of magazines on how to better my life, how to dress, etc. After writing my original post about the movie in 2008, a reader named Dave sent me a box filled with his late mother’s wonderful vintage editions of Gladys Taber books, including Country Chronicle and Stillmeadow Road. Her surroundings at the home she called Stillmeadow inspired her musings for a regular feature with Ladies Home Journal entitled ‘Diary of Domesticity,’ and for a subsequent series of books. The writings of Gladys Taber came into my life when I was quite young.

The young family lived in a small, dark apartment in NYC, but she and her childhood friend and NYC neighbor, Eleanor (Jill in the books) yearned for a simpler, cleaner life in the country to raise their children and beloved dogs, away from the smog and noise of the big city. Like many intellectuals in the early twentieth century, Taber came to Southbury in 1934 for the quiet and serenity of country living. Gladys married Frank Taber and had one daughter, Constance.
